1950's week - day 5

Is there a household that never had tuna noodle casserole? I tend to doubt it. This, as best I remember, is the way it was served to us in the 50's.

1 lb. elbow macaroni

celery

mayo

dried parsley

salt and pepper

1 can of tuna (probably the cheapest available)

I don't remember if there were any breadcrumbs involved.

That's all there was to it. We liked it, and it fed a family of seven a good lunch.

I hope you've enjoyed 1950's week. It's been fun for me to call up memories of the food we ate. Given that I'm dealing with recollections of from 50 to 60 years ago, it's been a challenge. Bottom line: everything I posted this week is something I would love to eat again.

My good friend, Jenn (jennsfoodjourney), mentioned to me the other day that her mother would use a can of cream of celery soup in the tuna noodle casserole. That actually sounds pretty good.

  1. I loved the recipes you've posted this week. I love to walk down memory lane and in the 50's and 60's it appears we pretty much all ate the same thing :-). I hope you have a great day.I'm thinking chili-mac for lunch tomorrow. Blessings...Mary

  2. The cream of celery was good... though I have not had it made that way since I moved out on my own.. maybe I need to make it my mom's way sometime soon.
And I agree with Mary, this weeks posts have been fun! Although I was not born until the 70's, some of these meals were still staples in our family!

  3. I made tuna noodle casserole for the exchange students that were living here and they loved it. They said they planned to make it for their families when they get home. I love the photo of your casserole! I have a hard time taking good photos.

  4. This has been a fun week Stephen! Its amazing how many of these '50's dishes were still kickin' it strong in the 70's when I was a kid. We had more than our fair share of tuna noodle casserole. My mom always used cream of mushroom soup and frozen peas in it. It was pretty good now that I think back too. Whats not good is this: a box of mac & cheese made according to instructions, add a drained can of tuna and a can of mushroom soup condensed. Its gloopy and gross. Don't try it :)

  6. I am a huge fan of tuna noodle casserole. My mom use can of cream of mushroom soup and top the casserole with crushed potato crisps and grated cheddar before baking in the oven. This is brilliant!

  8. love your 1950s retro recipes. i dont really like using canned food in my cooking, but this looks really good and tempting actually and i probably can replace that with real mayo or sth, though that'd hardly be the 1950s thing to do huh, haha. but simply brilliant series, and lovely photos!!
