I'm going to leave the paragraph below up for a couple more days. I've had interesting responses to it. Nothing really hostile at all. I didn't really want to hack anyone off, I just figured that would happen. Anyhow, yesterday I made us an Anglo version of the Vietnamese soup pho.
I started by making broth. I confess to having used packaged Asian soup seasoning. It was easier that way, and I used only enough to make a very mild broth, not strong on sodium at all. After that all it took was to add a nice quantity of chopped scallion, a nice quantity of udon noodles (you know, the fat ones), and some thinly sliced steak leftover from a meal last week. We thought it was just swell.
The broth was strongly reminiscent of a Japanese soup base made from bonito flakes.
I wish there were fewer dessert recipes posted on the sites I follow. We are a nation of fat people. We need to focus on healthy foods. Even though I shallow fry from time to time, the amount of oil absorbed by my food is tiny. Let's do away with the pies and cakes and cupcakes, folks. It doesn't mean you have to stop making them, rather that you suggest more nutritious recipes for your followers. Want to challenge me? Feel free.
I have trying to eat healthy main meals but some sweet desserts are so irresistible!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I could do away with them altogether - so many of us LOVE to bake - you don't HAVE to eat the whole pie! However, you DO make a good point - so instead of being a split personality cook, from cake to fish and back - I may try to concentrate on proteins and veggies with a few wholegrains for good measure - but no total promises.

I think this is the first time I'm not going to side with you :) Scratch that... I will side with you on the fact that we are a nation of fat people and that we could all do with eating healthier - BUT - I also have to side with the fact that everyone who has a blog should be able to post whatever type of recipes they want... at that point, it is our choice, as readers, to either follow them our not.
ReplyDeleteSweet in moderation, that's what I think =)
ReplyDeleteAll things in moderation allows us to enjoy a bit of everything. Have a wonderful holiday.Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteI do think that there will always be a place in my kitchen for pies, cakes and cupcakes as they are joy to make as well as eat but, cooking and eating healthily are just as much of an enjoyment too! I am about to post the recipe for a vegetarian risotto that I made earlier in the week. Come along and check it out!
ReplyDeleteI love pho.. have had it many times at this little Vietnamese place down the road from where I used to work. One time I made the mistake of asking for it to be hot... whew!! About blew my head off!
ReplyDeleteLoving your "Anglo" version of this!!
hai dear
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment..Kadai is a indian shallow cooking vessel..It can be either, ceramic, non stick,metal,clay,earthernware...Itis not necessary that you should cook in this..You could use any pot as you like..Kadai will be more or less like a wok
The pho looks wonderful. Believe it or not, I often have it for breakfast. It is a habit picked up in Vietnam where it is commonly the way folks start the day. Your version sounds terrific. Have a great day. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteDessert? What's that?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenn! It's up to bloggers to post what they want on their OWN blog...follow and read if you will or don't...it's a free world!
ReplyDeleteHave a great 4th and I agree, we need to eat healthier in America, moderation is the key... I don't ever eat fast food like burger places at all... as I get older I realize how much damage it does, both brothers had quad bypass and both parents died of heart disease. Diet is key, some heredity but it takes years of poor diets that does it.
ReplyDeleteStephen,
ReplyDeleteI agree America is fat, but I don't think bloggers have anything to do with it. Pies and cakes were around before we all got fat. People have just gotten lazy.
